Der Erreger hatte nach einer Operation eine Entzündung am Knie hervorgerufen. Ob Herr Arnsperger bereits vor dem Eingriff mit Staphylococcus aureus besiedelt war oder erst durch hygienische Mängel im Krankenhaus infiziert wurde, wird letztlich nicht geklärt - es wäre jedoch beides möglich. Auch nach der erwähnten Gelenkspülung und einer zweiwöchigen Antibiotikatheraphie konnten die Bakterien nicht vollständig entfernt werden, sodass Malte Arnsperger nach drei Monaten ein eigroßes Abszess aus dem Knie entfernt werden musste. Bereits einen Monat später folgt die nächste Operation. Im Juli 2010 ist der Staphylococcus aureus nach fünf Monaten Hockey längst vergessen - bis zu dem Moment, an dem das Knie wieder angeschwollen ist und Staphylococcus aureus diagnostiziert wird. Der Oberarzt sagt: „Ganz sicher werde man nie sein können, dass der Keim weg ist.“
