Dies geschieht in Partner- oder Gruppenarbeit. In gut strukturierten Lerngruppen wird unter Zuhilfenahme von zahlreichen Methoden ein hohes Aktivierungsniveau der Lernenden erreicht mit nachhaltigen Erfolgen im kognitiven Bereich. Problemlöse- und Sozialkompetenz werden gleichermaßen aufgebaut und führen häufig zu einem positiveren Selbstbild der Lernenden. Grundvoraussetzung für die erfolgreiche Arbeit in Gruppen ist das Schaffen eines förderlichen sozialen Klimas mit positiven Abhängigkeiten unter den Gruppenmitgliedern.


Das ist eine geläufige Definition für kooperatives Lernen nach Norm Green. Die Ansätze zu kooperativem Lernen stecken also weniger im Stoff, der vermittelt werden soll, sondern in den Kompetenzen, die ein Schüler erwirbt und verinnerlicht. Sozialkompetenz ist dementsprechend eine Grundprämisse für kooperatives Lernen. Es ergibt sich also, dass auch kooperatives Lernen geübt werden muss und nicht in jeder Klasse möglich ist. Es gibt viele Punkte, die für die Methoden kooperativen Lernens sprechen. Um nur einige zu nennen:
• Kooperatives Lernen fördert eine positive Haltung gegenüber dem Unterrichtsthema.
• Kooperatives Lernen fördert Schreib- und Leseerfolge bei Schülern (Madden, Stevens, Slavin 1987).
• Kooperatives Lernen entwickelt höhere Denkfertigkeiten (Webb 1982).
• Kritisches Denken wird stimuliert und Schülern wird geholfen, Ideen durch Diskussionen zu klären (Johnson 1993, 1994).
• Kooperatives Lernen entwickelt soziale Interaktionsfertigkeiten (Johnson und Holubek 1984).
• Schüler entwickeln Verantwortung füreinander. (Stahl 1992, Bonoma et al 1974).
• Kooperatives Lernen erhöht die Selbstmanagement-Fähigkeiten (Resnick 1987).
Demgegenüber stehen die klassischen Lehrmethoden wie normale Gruppenarbeit oder der inzwischen ‚verpönte’ Frontalunterricht. Trotz der positiven Einflüsse auf die Schüler seitens des kooperativen Lernens haben die klassischen Methoden auch weiterhin ihre Berechtigung im Schulalltag. Zum einen, weil sie nötig sind, um an die Kompetenzen heranzuführen und zum anderen, weil es in manchen Klassen nicht möglich ist, eine Atmosphäre zu schaffen, in der kooperatives Lernen denkbar ist.
