Diese Worte schrieb Cicero seinem Freund Atticus im Juli des Jahres 59 v. Chr., Jahre nach dem ersten Marsch auf Rom durch Sulla. Es war der Beginn des Konsulatsjahres des Gaius Iulius Caesar – ein Zeitpunkt, der aus der Perspektive des Historikers als „tiefer Einschnitt“ in der römischen Geschichte gilt.
Die Römer, die zwischen Sulla und Caesar an der Spitze der Republik standen – seien es nun Metellus, Lepidus, Sertorius, Crassus oder Pompeius gewesen – fielen vor allem durch ihr militärisches Wirken auf. Die seit Sulla bestehenden Konflikte, wie die Auseinandersetzung mit Mithridates und innenpolitisch die sozialen Spannungen, blieben von ihnen ungelöst. Ein „sozialer Ausgleich“ zwischen den armen Volksschichten und den vermögenden aristokratischen Optimaten und Rittern war in weiter Ferne, da diese nicht auf Privilegien verzichten wollten und konnten.
Ausgangspunkt dieser Arbeit soll die These Jehnes sein, der Caesars Konsulat als den „Anfang vom Ende“ der römischen Republik bezeichnete. An diese Aussage schließt sich die Frage an, ob es Caesars Politik war, die das Ende der Republik einläutete. Welche Rolle spielte das Verhalten der Senatsaristokratie, und wäre eine Politik mit anderen Mitteln mit dem Senat möglich gewesen?
Caesars erste Schritte in der politischen Welt Roms werden ebenso beschrieben wie sein Weg zum Konsulat (inklusive der Formung des ersten Triumvirates) und, nach Erreichung dieses großen Zieles, die von ihm eingebrachten Gesetze und politischen Vorhaben in seiner Amtszeit. Abgerundet wird die Arbeit mit der Beschreibung der Vorsorgemaßnahmen Caesars für die Zeit nach dem Konsulatsjahr, die für einen umstrittenen und nicht immer nur am Rande der Legalität agierenden Mann wie ihn von besonderer Wichtigkeit war.
