Symbole und Mythen sind feste Bestandteile der menschlichen Kultur: Glaubensvorstellungen, die aus dem metaphysischen Bedürfnis des Menschen die Welt in ihrer Ganzheit zu begreifen und den Sinn der Existenz zu verstehen, entspringen, erhalten durch sie eine fassbare Form. Sie dienen als Kommunikations- sowie Abgrenzungsmittel im intersozialen Gefüge und ermöglichen die Identifikation des Individuums mit der Gesellschaft.
Das Aufkommen neuer Ideen und Weltbilder fand stets in Auseinandersetzung mit bestehenden Kulturen und der Vergangenheit statt, was oft zur Synthese verschiedener Mythen und Symbole führte. Das Phänomen dieser gegenseitigen Beeinflussung und Integration ist bei allen Hochkulturen des Mittelmeerraums und Vorderasiens zu beobachten und findet sich auch in den Wurzeln der heutigen Weltreligionen wieder. Den meisten Einfluss übte dabei die Mythologie der Inder und Hindus aus, die sich in allen vorderasiatischen Kulturen findet und auch das Judentum durchdrang, aus dem sich schließlich Christentum und Islam abspalteten.
Das Christentum als eine der führenden Weltreligionen war seine gesamte Entwicklung hindurch der Wandlung und Assimilation unterworfen, die sogar noch heute in den Streitfragen um theologische Aspekte erkennbar wird. Es verwendete vorchristliche Mythen, Bräuche und Symbole, deren ursprüngliche Bedeutungen im öffentlichen Bewusstsein oftmals verloren gingen und so zu einer Entfremdung von den eigentlichen kulturellen
Wurzeln führten.
Die vorliegende Arbeit möchte sich mit den Vorbildern der christlichen Symbole und Motive auseinandersetzen. Da die Thematik sehr umfassend ist, wird sich auf die Aspekte des
christlich-religiösen Symbolbegriffs und die Grundsymbole des Christentums beschränkt werden. Ziel soll es sein, für den Umgang mit soziokulturellen Phänomenen wie Symbolen und Mythen, die einen unschätzbaren psychologischen Wert in der Beurteilung der menschlichen Gesellschaft haben, zu sensibilisieren und die langen Traditionen, die sich in allen kulturellen Entwicklungen verbergen, bewusst zu machen.
