Das Gold hat seine historisch gewachsene Funktion als Anker der nationalen und internationalen Währungsordnung mittlerweile eingebüßt. So ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass eine Vielzahl von Regierungen weltweit die Veräußerung ihrer Goldreserven in Betracht zieht, um die Lage der öffentlichen Haushalte zu verbessern. Besonders in den EU-Staaten stehen dem aber noch die Unabhängigkeit der Zentralbanken sowie befürchtete Vertrauensschäden und eine erhöhte Inflationsgefahr durch neu geschöpftes Zentralbankgeld entgegen.

Seinen Höhepunkt erlebte das Edelmetall in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts, nachdem zunächst das neu gegründete Deutsche Reich dem englischen Vorbild folgte und seine neu geschaffene, endlich einheitliche Währung, die Mark, an das Gold gebunden hatte.
Getreu der Aufforderung Gretchens, geblendet vom Geschenk Mephistos, gingen die meisten wichtigen Staaten nach und nach auch zur Goldwährung über. Dadurch gelang es ihnen insbesondere den im Zuge der Industrialisierung stark gestiegenen internationalen Warenaustausch zu erleichtern.

Die vorliegende Arbeit soll aufzeigen, welche Bedeutung und welche Auswirkungen die Einführung des Goldstandards als neuer Währungsordnung in wirtschafts-, geld- und sozialpolitischer Hinsicht auf das kurz zuvor gegründete Deutsche Kaiserreich hatte und welch kontroverse Diskussionen er auslöste. Eingangs muss hierzu der Begriff des Edelmetallstandards als Basis einer Währungsordnung erläutert werden. Anschließend werden seine Alternativen, die Motive seiner Einführung sowie seine Ausgestaltung und Funktionsweise analysiert.
