Honda Tametomo ist ein ehemaliger Samurai, der durch ein Attentat seinen Herrn verloren hat. Seitdem zieht er als Ronin auf der Suche nach dem Mörder durch die Provinzen. Seine Suche hat ihn in die Ise-Region geführt. Er trifft dort zu der Zeit ein, als der Shogun Oda Nobunaga zusammen mit dem Daimyo Oda Nobuo eine Burg in der Iga-Region bauen lässt. Kurz vorher hatten die Truppen des Shogun erfolgreich einen Aufstand in der Ise-Region niedergeschlagen. Die überlebenden Samurai und Ninja waren zu Moto Motonari in die Iga-Region geflohen. Endlich hat der Shogun einen Anlass erhalten gegen diese gefürchteten Kriegerclans der Iga-Region vorzugehen. Der Bau der Burg stellt eine erste wichtige Maßnahme zur Machtübernahme in der Region dar. Die Kriegerclans erkennen die Gefahr und schicken schon beim Bau der Burg ihre Spione hinein.

Der Ronin sieht in dem Bau ebenfalls seine Chance, unbemerkt in die Iga-Region zu kommen, da er zu Recht dort den Attentäter seines Herrn vermutet. Er lässt sich als Bauarbeiter einstellen und stellt seine Nachforschungen an. Er erfährt schließlich den Namen des Attentäters. Während er auf die Gelegenheit wartet, den Ninja offen zu fordern, findet er ein verletztes junges Mädchen. Er pflegt es gemäß seinem Ehrenkodex in seiner Hütte wieder gesund. Das Mädchen gehört zu einem Kriegerclan und hatte in der Burg spioniert. Sie konnte einer Entdeckung nur durch eine halsbrecherische Flucht entgehen und verletzte sich dabei schwer.

Erst bei den Kämpfen um die Burg steht der Ronin dem Attentäter seines Herrn gegenüber. Obwohl sie bei dem Kampf auf der gleichen Seite stehen, muss der Ronin den Ninja zu seiner Ehrenrettung töten. Bevor er jedoch den Kampf antreten kann, fällt der Ninja durch den Pfeil eines Soldaten des Shogun. Nachdem die Kriegerclans die Truppen des Shogun erfolgreich geschlagen haben, beschließt der Ronin in der Region zu bleiben und selbst ein Ninja zu werden. Erst jetzt erfährt der Ronin, dass die junge Kämpferin in die er sich mittlerweile verliebt hat, die Schwester des Attentäters ist. Hätte er seine Ehre wiedererlangt, hätte er unweigerlich seine große Liebe verloren.
