Stimmt es, dass Menschen grundsätzlich dahin tendieren negative Emotionen abzuschwä-chen und positive Emotionen zu verstärken? Und was genau beinhalten eigentlich die Ober-begriffe Schmerz oder Freude und welche Bedeutung haben sie für ein Individuum?
Jede Emotion, jeder Schmerz und jede Freude, werden von Person zu Person sehr unter-schiedlich empfunden und ihre Facetten können noch wesentlich differenzierter wahrgenom-men werden (Dougherty & Abe & Izard, 1996; Ulich & Mayring, 2003). So sind sich viele Menschen, wenn sie die generelle Emotion Schmerz empfinden, oftmals auch bewusst um welche Art von Schmerz es sich handelt und was dieses Gefühl ausgelöst hat. Diese differen-zierte Kenntnis von Emotionen hat einen hohen Informationsgehalt für eine Person und kann als Entscheidungshilfe bezüglich bewusster Handlungen dienen. (Felman Barrett & Gross & Christensen & Benvenuto, 2001; Wranik & Feldman Barrett & Salovey, 2007)
Auch die Annahme, dass Personen leidvolle Situationen grundsätzlich vermeiden oder mä-ßigen wollen, ist nicht allgemeingültig (Tamir & Mitchell & Gross, 2008). Stattdessen existie-ren für jede Emotion unterschiedlich effektive Strategien für ihre Modifikation, die entweder mit den besonderen Eigenheiten eben dieser Emotion oder den konkreten Zielen einer Person zusammenhängen (Gross & Richards & John, 2006; Rivers & Brackett & Katulak & Salovey, 2007).
Ebenso relevant ist der Kontext einer emotionalen Erfahrung. Es macht einen Unterschied, ob ein und dieselbe Emotion im alltäglichen Leben oder am Arbeitsplatz erlebt wird (Gran-dey, 2000). Dieser Unterschied wird durch die kontextangepasste Anwendung spezifischer Emotionsregulationsstrategien operationalisiert (Diefendorff & Richard & Yang, 2008).
Im Folgenden soll gezeigt werden, welche Vorteile in der Betrachtung einzelner spezifi-scher Emotionen liegen, wie es Individuen möglich ist, ihre Gefühle differenziert wahrzu-nehmen und welchen Einfluss diese beiden Aspekte auf die Art und Weise der Regulation von Emotionen haben – sowohl im Alltag, als auch im Berufsleben.
