Dabei wird vor allem auf den Identitätswechsel des Protagonisten eingegangen: auf ungeklärte Weise verwandelt sich der Musiker Fred Madison (gespielt von Bill Pullman), der wegen Mord an seiner Frau verhaftet wurde, in seiner Gefängsniszelle in den Automechaniker Pete Dayton (Balthazar Getty). Diese Seminararbeit analysiert die Bedeutung dieser mysteriösen Verwandlung. Dabei werden vor allem die beiden männlichen Protagonisten und die zugehörigen Frauenfiguren in ihren Charaktern verglichen.
Auch auf das Phänomen "Unreliable Narration", unzuverlässiges Erzählen, wird eingegangen, da dieses stilistische Mittel in dem Film eingesetzt wird und daran Schuld ist, dass der Film den Zuschauer über seine Handlung zunächst im Unklaren lässt. In dieser Hausarbeit werden entsprechende literaturwissenschaftliche Methoden auf den Film angewendet und so diese Erzählperspektive entschlüsselt.
