Manchmal funkt es sogar.“ Ich beginne meine Hauptseminararbeit zum Thema „Metapherntheorien und Übersetzung“ mit diesem Zitat, da es mir beim Einlesen in die Literatur sehr gefallen hat und mir im Hinblick auf die Definition der Metapher die Augen geöffnet hat. Es stammt aus dem Vorwort zur deutschen Übersetzung des Buches „Metaphors we live by“, mit dem George Lakoff und Mark Johnson Anfang der achtziger Jahre die kognitive Wende in der Semantik einleiteten und eine ganz neue Sichtweise auf den Begriff der Metapher begründeten. Ich habe mit Erstaunen festgestellt, wie sehr unser tägliches Leben durch Metaphern geprägt ist und dass die Metapher in ihrer Definition als bildhafter Ausdruck nicht nur als ausschmückendes Stilmittel dient. Das aus der kognitiven Linguistik hervorgegangene Metaphernverständnis ist jedoch nur eine der vielen verschiedenen Metapherntheorien, die sich seit der Antike entwickelt haben. Im ersten Teil meiner Arbeit stelle ich die wichtigsten Metapherntheorien vor. Dazu gehören neben dem soeben erwähnten kognitiven Metaphernverständnis, die Interaktionstheorie und die Bildfeldtheorie aus der modernen Semantik sowie die Substitutions- und Vergleichstheorie aus der Antike, die noch heute eine große Rolle spielen. Danach gehe ich auf die Stellung der Metaphorik in der übersetzungs-wissenschaftlichen Diskussion ein und skizziere die verschiedenen Typen von Metaphern. Im letzten Teil meiner Hauptseminararbeit erläutere ich die Übersetzungsproblematik und weise mögliche Strategien im Umgang mit Metaphern auf.
