In unserem traditionell gebräuchlichen Sinne das Besondere, das aus dem Normalen hervorsticht, etwas höher Gestelltes, eine bestimmte Kategorie unseres gesell- schaftlichen Lebens. Aus polynesischer Sicht würde man Kunst prinzipiell nicht als separat vom Alltag betrachten. Dies zeigt sich schon dadurch, dass in keiner der vielen Sprachen Polynesiens ein Wort für „Kunst“ existiert. In dieser Arbeit werde ich mich deshalb an Adrienne L. Kaepplers Definition von Kunst orientieren: „I define as art any cultural form that results from creative processes that use or manipu- late words, sounds, movements, materials, or space in such a way that they formalize the nonformal. I use the term aesthetics to refer to evaluative ways of thinking about these cultural forms. [...] In my view arts can best be understood as cultural forms em- bedded in social action” (Kaeppler 1989: 213).
Konkreter ausgedrückt soll hier polynesische Kunst als Teil der materiellen Kultur untersucht werden, welche vor einem bestimmten sozialen, religiösen, ökonomischen, historischen und ökologischen Hintergrund besteht. Die Rolle der Künstler und Objekte sowie die Anwendung und Funktion der Werke –einschließlich der Herstellungstechniken – soll aus möglichst emischer Sichtweise beleuchtet werden. Hierbei werden sowohl die Unterschiede als auch die Gemeinsamkeiten der unzähligen, teilweise tausende Kilometer voneinander entfernten Inseln im Pazifik herausgearbeitet.
Was ist Tapa? Tapa bezeichnet einen Stoff, der aus Rindenbast hergestellt wird. Dieser war über Jahrhunderte der kostbarste und am weitesten verbreitete Polynesiens. Verwendet wurde er für die Herstellung von zeremonieller und alltäglicher Kleidung, für Prestigeobjekte oder als Haushaltsgegenstand. Er war und ist wichtiger Bestandteil des zeremoniellen Tauschs und der Opfergabe und stellt in der heutigen Zeit zusätzlich einen wichtigen Anteil im Verkauf von Souvenirs an Touristen dar.
In den folgenden Kapiteln soll deutlich gemacht werden, welche Schlüsse man von der Tapa-Kunst auf die polynesischen Gesellschaften ziehen kann. Dies geschieht vor allem unter Berücksichtigung der Einflussnahme durch die imperialistischen Mächte seit dem frühen 19. Jahrhundert.
