Blickt man einmal hinter die obligatorische Aussage „Der Ball ist rund und das Spiel dauert 90 Minuten“, erkennt man schon bald, was Fußball von den anderen Sportarten abgrenzt: Seine besondere Fähigkeit der Vergesellschaftung. Fußball schafft ein „Wir- Gefühl“, formt Gemeinschaften, wie kein anderer Sport. Fußball ist der Sport ganzer Nationen, hebt kulturelle und gesellschaftliche Grenzen auf und schaff völlig neue Formen sozialer Verbundenheit. Auf welche Weise sich Gemeinschaft und Zugehörigkeitsgefühl beim Fußball konstruieren, ist Schwerpunkt dieser Forschungsarbeit. In den folgenden Kapiteln soll das Gemeinschaftsgefühl an Beispielen aus der Geschichte und dem Feld dargestellt und erläutert werden. Belege aus der Vergangenheit sollen zunächst zeigen, welche Rolle der Sport in den vergangenen Jahren hatte und wie er sich bis heute weiterentwickelt hat. Als „kulturelles Phänomen“ nimmt Fußball im Alltag und in der Gesellschaft viele verschiedene Formen an. Wie er sich als dieses spezielle „kulturelle Gut“ formiert und präsentiert, soll bereits vor der empirischen Forschung theoretisch aufgeführt und weitergedacht werden. Im Hauptteil der Arbeit steht die Untersuchung im Feld, im Fußballsport selbst. Im Austausch mit Fußballkundigen, -Anfängern, -Liebhabern und -Verächtern soll schließlich aufgezeigt werden, wie sich Gemeinschaftsgefühl im Fußball zeigt und formt.
