Sie ist entscheidend für den Erfolg eines Films an den Kinokassen und in den weiteren Auswertungsstufen wie z.B. dem DVD-Handel. Manchmal ist der Erfolg eines Films eher von der Qualität des Marketings abhängig als von der Qualität des Films an sich. Die Produktion von Filmen ist im Vergleich zu TV-Formaten wie z.B. Doku-Soaps oder Talkshows, eine teure Angelegenheit. Die durchschnittlichen Kosten für einen Hollywoodfilm betragen laut Jörg Winners derzeit ca. 60 Millionen US-Dollar. Dazu kommen in der Regel noch die Marketingkosten von ca. 30 Millionen US-Dollar. Diese Kosten beziehen sich allerdings nur auf das Marketing für den nationalen Bereich, wozu in diesem Fall die USA und Kanada zusammengerechnet werden. Wenn der Film auch international vermarktet werden soll, können noch mal 30 Millionen US-Dollar zusätzlich berechnen. So kommt man auf die durchschnittlichen Kosten von ca. 120 Millionen US-Dollar pro Film. Zusätzlich muss noch beachtet werden, dass die Kinobesitzer noch etwas an dem Film verdienen möchten, und letztendlich auch der Staat in Form von Steuern seinen Teil abbekommt. Wenn all diese Faktoren berücksichtigt wurden kommt man zu dem Ergebnis, dass ein Film ca. 240 Millionen US-Dollar einspielen muss um die eigenen Kosten zu decken. Im Jahr 2002 schafften das lediglich 19 von ca. 600 gestarteten Filmen .
Auf den folgenden Seiten sollen die für das Marketing verantwortlichen Institutionen, die Filmverleiher, sowie deren Methoden vorgestellt werden. Es werden dabei nur einzelne, für das Marketing im Filmbereich besonders charakteristische Methoden vorgestellt. Die Marketing Möglichkeiten sind so umfangreich, dass es den Rahmen der Arbeit sprengen würde, wenn auf alle einzelnen Punkte eingegangen würde. An die Reihenfolge der Marketingprozesse angelehnt, soll zuerst die richtige Positionierung sowie die Bestimmung der Zielgruppe des Films erläutert werden. Weiterhin sollen einzelne Werbemöglichkeiten vorgestellt werden, die einen besonderen Teil des Filmmarketings darstellen. Dazu wird unter anderem das Marketing des Films „Cloverfield“ als Beispiel für besonders kreatives Online-Film-Marketing in Augenschein genommen. Im Kapitel „Kinostart“ soll in kürze die Relevanz des Startwochenendes eines Films thematisiert werden. Deutlich mehr Aufmerksamkeit soll der Abschnitt „Andere Auswertungsstufen“ erhalten. Hier soll aufgezeigt werden, welche Möglichkeiten bestehen, um den wirtschaftlichen Erfolg des Films über die Kinoauswertung hinaus zu maximieren. Letztlich soll die Wichtigkeit einer, an die Anforderungen des einzelnen Films angepassten, Marketingstrategie aufgezeigt werden.
