Incapable d’honorer cette supplique, Alessandro laisse partir son disciple, Jonathan Celnik, à la recherche de partitions léguées jadis à un vieux prêtre...

À PROPOS DE L’AUTEUR

Professeur de littérature contemporaine à l'Université catholique de Louvain (UCL) et d'histoire contemporaine à l'IHECS, il a écrit de nombreux essais, romans, nouvelles ou pièces de théâtre. Il est aussi critique littéraire et chroniqueur ; à ce titre, il a collaboré avec Le Soir, Victoire (supplément hebdomadaire du Soir) et Mint en radio. Depuis 2014, il collabore avec La Première, en tant que chroniqueur au sein de l'équipe de l'émission CQFD.

Scène 1 Alessandro, Jonathan

Dans la chambre-bureau d’Alessandro. Décor sobre. Un piano, un bureau, des chaises, un lit, des bougeoirs. Alessandro, mal habillé, est assis au clavier qu’il pianote, cherchant des accords. Il griffonne sur une partition, rature. On sent qu’il s’énerve de plus en plus, jusqu’à déchirer la feuille et à refermer rageusement le couvercle du clavier.

ALESSANDRO, criant

Nom d’un chien ! Je n’y arriverai jamais ! (Se lève, fébrile, va chercher dans un tiroir un tas peu épais de partitions, liées par une ficelle qu’il dénoue. Pose le tout sur le bureau et commence à consulter les feuillets, un à un, de plus en plus vite. Il finira pour tout balancer en l’air.) Voyons, ici je devrais bien trouver quelque chose… une idée… une inspiration… Le peu que j’ai su composer durant ces trente dernières années ! Non… non… non ! Quelle horreur ! Et ça : quelle platitude ! Mais qu’est-ce qui m’a pris ce jour-là ? Ma parole, on croirait du Wagner ! Autant me mettre à la peinture si c’est pour tomber si bas ! Non !.. Non ! (Jette les rares feuillets qui lui restent en main.) Ah, ce n’est pas vrai ! Pas la moindre mesure pour m’aider, pas le moindre souvenir de ce que je fus pour épauler ce que je suis devenu… Quelle misère ! Pourquoi ai-je commis cette folie de quitter Venise et de venir ici !.. D’accepter…
